ROMA lead the race to sign Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen after meeting with the players agent.
The Italian club were interested in Vertonghen when he left Ajax in 2012 but the Belgian instead choose to move to north London based on the promise of Champions League football.
However, Vertonghen is on record as saying that he would need to consider his future at Spurs if they failed to qualify for the competition next season.
And with Tim Sherwood's side currently sitting in sixth place - seven points behind Arsenal in fourth with three games remaining - it seems that Vertonghen has instructed his agent to start sounding out alternatives.
Reports in Italy suggest that Roma - buoyed by the ability to offer Champions League football next term - have rekindled their interest in Vertonghen
Walter Sabatini has met with Jan Vertonghen's agent
Roma see Vertonghen as the perfect central defensive partner for Manchester United, Arsenal and Bayern Munich target Mehdi Benatia, or as an ideal replacement should the Moroccan international be tempted away.
Indeed, it is thought that Roma sporting director Walter Sabatini has already met with the 26-year-old's agent in Florence on at least one occasion.
Andre Villas-Boas - who was sacked by Tottenham in December - is also thought to be interested in taking Vertonghen to new club Zenit St Petersburg, who can also offer Champions League football next term.
But it seems the prospect of a slightly more respected league in Serie A could win Vertonghen over, if Spurs can be persuaded to let the player leave.
