BRITAIN’S shambolic justice system was slammed by a sex assault victim last night after sentencing of her attacker was halted for the 11th time.
The 23-year-old student is still waiting for justice, even though the migrant admitted attempted rape more than a year ago.
The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was subjected to a terrifying attack by Latvian Rolands Brize, 26.
She has found the courage to attend seven hearings, only to hear the case being adjourned again.
Once it was because no bed could be found for her attacker. Another time the court couldn’t book a translator. Now medical experts have been granted more time to assess how best to treat Brize.
The victim said: “It has been more than a year...nothing is being done and no one seems to care.
“Everything is on the offender’s terms because it’s best for him and his frame of mind and so they don’t do anything which makes him feel uncomfortable, uneasy or unwell.
“What about how this makes me feel?”
Everything is on the offender’s terms because it’s best for him and his frame of mind and so they don’t do anything which makes him feel uncomfortable, uneasy or unwell. What about how this makes me feel?
After hearing her statement at Hull Crown Court, Judge Mark Bury told a doctor for the defence: “You would do well to remember what she said when you are dealing with Mr Brize.”
He warned: “This case is turning into a scandal and I will not have it.
“I will extend the hospital order for 28 days and no further. If there isn’t one then, I will sentence without one.”
He made it clear he is considering a life sentence. The court heard that Brize had been a long-term psychiatric patient in Latvia after burning down his family home.
He spotted his victim walking home from a nightclub in Hull city centre in March last year.
CCTV captured him grabbing her from behind. She screamed and at first managed to shake him off.
She dialled 999 from her mobile phone to explain that a man was following her and had just tried to grab her. But as she spoke to the operator, Brize pounced again.
Officers raced to the scene just in time to haul him from his victim as the attack was under way.
She had to be treated for cuts and bruises on her legs and back at Hull Royal Infirmary.
Brize has been treated at Chadwick Lodge, a 52-bed secure unit in Buckinghamshire since January.
Doctor Omer Khan told Judge Bury at court last week: “It is not an easy process to diagnose someone and he has only just come to us.
“I am looking towards him possibly having a psychotic illness and possibly him being best managed in a hospital. We are appreciative of how long this has been going on but we are doing our best.”
Denise McCunnell, of rape support organisation Survivors Hull and East Riding, said: “Brize has become more important than the victim in the entire process.
“Every time they go for sentencing she will be reliving the event.
“The closure she needs will only start when this man is sent to prison or is in an institution. Why can’t they just get it dealt with?”
