VICTORIA BECKHAM admits people thought she was a “laughing stock” when she started designing clothes but now she’s feted as a top name in fashion, the mother-of-four proves the joke is on her former detractors.

Beckham, 40, who counts Cameron Diaz and Beyoncé as famous fans of her luxury clothing line, says people had low expectations for her debut at New York Fashion Week in 2008.
“For a long time there I was a bit of a laughing stock,” she says.

“And while everybody was busy laughing, what was I doing? I was laying the foundation to what I have in place now.”

The former Spice Girl, whose range is sold worldwide, says she didn’t let her critics get to her.

“Everybody said, ‘Well it’s never going to work because a celebrity can’t do a line [but because] everyone thought it was going to be rubbish [it took] the pressure off a little bit,” she tells The Business of Fashion magazine, which is out today.

“There were no expectations. I didn’t expect it to be any other way. I didn’t go into this to prove anything to anybody other than myself.”

The designer, who is married to former England footballer David Beckham, is adamant that her brand is far more important to her than celebrity.

“I like to keep my head down, work hard, focus on what I’m doing businesswise,” she adds.

“I like to try to control how much I’m seen. I don’t want to go out and be photographed every day, you know.”
