Mourinho tried to prevent Gerrard taking a quick throw-in just 10 minutes into the match with the Blues accused to time-wasting from the off.
And when the Reds' captain wrestled the ball from Mourinho's grasp he was met with a huge cheer by the already raucous Anfield crowd.
He's being an idiot.
Former Reds midfielder Jimmy Case told the BBC: "He's being an idiot. He's got the hump with the FA, he's got the hump with everyone and probably got the hump because he's ill. He's just being an idiot."
Chelsea earlier announced that Mourinho was travelling separately from the squad as he battled an illness that he didn't wish to pass onto his team.
But the Portuguese manager took his place out on the pitch for the pre-match warm-up and took the opportunity to pass instructions on to his players.
Mourinho had earlier warned that he could play a youthful side against Liverpool ahead of the second leg of the Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.
But that all looked like mind-games when Chelsea named a largely experienced side to try and halt Liverpool's title march in a match which Mourinho admitted he did desperately want to win.
