Liverpool are expected to hand Brendan Rodgers a £50m transfer kitty at the end of the season with a view to strengthening the squad for a Champions League campaign.
With defence an occasionally problematic area for Liverpool this season, the Reds are widely expected to move for Schalke's Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Sporting Lisbon's Marco Rojo.
Papadopoulos is a long-term target for Liverpool and almost joined the club last summer before suffering a serious knee injury.
But the 22-year-old has returned strongly this season, and is seen as just the sort of powerful defender that can provide additional protection to Simon Mignolet.
Rafa Benitez remains a huge fan of Daniel Agger
Rojo, meanwhile, has broken into Argentina's national side at left-back this season but has impressed for Sporting in a central role.
And that could mean that Agger is all of a sudden surplus to requirements at Liverpool after being almost untouchable in recent years.
Rafa Benitez remains a huge fan of Agger after working with the Dane during his time in charge of the club and reports in Italy suggest the Spaniard would love to take him to Serie A.
However, Benitez could face competition from across Europe - including from Barcelona now that their transfer ban has been uplifted - should Agger come on the market.
Indeed, Rodgers may yet decide that Agger remains an important part of a rotating Liverpool squad next season even if he does manage to buy both Papadopoulos and Rojo.
