News of the taxidermy craze comes as it emerged a giant rat that is two feet long was captured in Liverpool.
It has raised fears that a new breed of 'super rat' which is immune to standard poisons have set foot in the UK.
Experts say the rats are becoming bigger because they are feasting on food left in bins or on the streets near takeaways, restaurants and houses.
Two foot long giant rats have also been found in Dublin and Birmingham in recent weeks.
It comes after a huge rat that measured 15 inches without its tail gnawed its way into the kitchen of a family in Sweden.
Mr Whelan added: "Access to food is so easy for them. They're like humans, they eat and eat and get bigger and bigger.
"They're twice as large as they once were. It's definitely not uncommon to see rats the size of a cat."
