Normally gorillas walk on all fours, but Ambam, who lives at Port Lympne wild animal park near Hythe, Kent, has the ability to raise himself to his full 6ft height and walk upright – a skill he shares with his sister Tamba and her two-year-old son Kabale.
All gorillas have the ability to stand upright but Ambam and his sister have a particular talent at standing and walking on two legs
Weighing 34st 9lb, Ambam, a western lowland gorilla, is the park’s biggest ape and could live to the age of 50.
He developed his skill at a year old when he was hand-raised after falling ill and had to be taken away from his mother Shumba.
