Six games without a win, five of them defeats, have put Villa on the edge of going out of the Premier League yet again.
Saturday is Villa’s last home game – where their record is poor - this season, followed by difficult away trips to Manchester City and Spurs.
Hull might not regard Saturday as a cup final, they’ve got the real one coming up in the FA Cup against Arsenal, but Lambert knows this is the most realistic chance of Villa getting out of trouble.
Where Aston Villa go from here is unclear with Lerner yet to say whether he is staying as owner or looking for a buyer - but Lambert has spelled out for the second time in three weeks what needs to be done.
He has been linked with Javier Hernandez, Joleon Lescott and Lewis Holtby, names that he has not denied but would cost fees and wages way above the current budget laid down by Lerner.
"A club of this size needs that calibre of player," said Lambert.
"I'm not just talking about those three lads because it would be wrong for me to talk about them, but we need that level of player for the size of this club, wherever they come from.
"It's not acceptable for this club to keep doing this, it's been four years of battling against relegation.
"Aston Villa is too big a football club to do this. That's the reality. I think everybody knows that."
