Diego Simeone's side ran out deserved 3-1 winners to knock Mourinho and his men out of Europe, leaving them to focus on their domestic campaign.
Chelsea are two points behind Liverpool in the Premier League with just two games to go, although City would overtake the Reds as leaders should they win their game in hand.
"We are realistic, but at the same time we are optimistic," he said.
"When things go in a certain direction, there is a moment where you dream and you think that things are possible, even if things are not.
"And because we did well in the Champions League and in the Premier League, there was a moment where we felt we could do it.
"In the Premier League it was the match against Aston Villa that made me believe that we had no chance to be champions.

But goals from Adrian Lopez, Diego Costa and Ardu Turan left Mourinho's European dream in tatters, with Chelsea's title aspirations facing a similar outlook.
