Tom Barnes, 31, has spent the past decade pimping the red Mini which does a quarter of a mile in 10.2 seconds compared to the Bugati's 10.4 seconds
The drag-racing champion's car is now beating super cars like the Ford Mustang on the race track despite still having all its original windows and doors.
It's really been a labour of love
"Just the most recent upgrade was probably 150 man hours between the three-man team of me, my brother Scott and my friend Jack.
"We pledged to stay at the garage every Thursday night, sometimes until two in the morning.
"It's really been a labour of love.
"It's such a good feeling knowing that we've done it in a Mini, that looks like a mini, it is a mini.
"We even think it can go a lot faster with a bit more work."
However, despite being quicker over a quarter of a mile it pales in comparison to the Bugatti's top speed of 267.856 mph.
The 2002 registration Mini came to mechanic Mr Barnes and his team ten years ago as a fire damaged wreckage.
But instead of putting it on the scrap head they turned it into a test car for their specialist mini garage in Cambridge.
The car has meant the petrolhead has spent hours away from wife Tabby and their three-month-old son Grayson.
Mr Barnes said: “My son Grayson is only small but I hope there'll be room for him to come up and follow his old dad in his footsteps."
The original Bugatti Veyron set the record for the fastest street-legal production car in the world in 2005 with a top speed of 253.81 mph.
That was then eclipsed in 2010 when the Super Sport version of the Veyron set a world record top speed of 267.856 mph.
