"My mum was absolutely delighted," he revealed.
"She's 84, plays bridge everyday and lives over in Africa - it's the one thing that gets transmitted where she lives."
"She hates all the stuff where I swear, because I get lots of sweaty parts," he said.
The Withnail and I actor, however, confessed that he was unable to give much more away about his role in the period drama though, revealing only that he would be an "upstairs character."
Richard ended up in hot water recently after he tweeted a picture of himself on set, much to the annoyance of write Julian Fellow, who has since put a Twitter ban into effect in the hope that it will keep from revealing spoilers about the highly anticipated show.
"We had to explain to the cast about the dangers of tweeting as no one realised how interested everybody was in the show. You’re in a bubble when you’re filming.
"You’re just tweeting these nice things and you don’t realise there are millions of people worldwide trying to pick up the plot."
