Ukip has seen a surge in support with leader Nigel Farage predicting his party could hoover up 200 extra council seats by the end of the day.
So far they have gained  more than 80 seats and Labour has gained more than 100 seats.
But the coalition is showing to have lost support, with the Lib Dems down more than 100 seats and the Tories losing control of eight councils.
