MANCHESTER UNITED have announced manager David Moyes has "left the club".
The news was announced in a short two-sentence statement on the club's official website.
It read: "Manchester United has announced that David Moyes has left the Club.
"The Club would like to place on record its thanks for the hard work, honesty and integrity he brought to the role."
United later announced that veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs, who has been a member of Moyes' coaching staff this season, will take over first-team duties on a temporary basis.
The club said: "Following the departure of David Moyes as manager, Manchester United has announced that Ryan Giggs, the club’s most decorated player, will assume responsibility for the first team until a permanent appointment can be made.
"The club will make no further comment on this process until it is concluded."
Candidates to replace Moyes in the long-term will also include current Holland coach Louis van Gaal, Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp and Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone.
Manchester United has announced that David Moyes has left the Club. The Club would like to place on record its thanks for the hard work, honesty and integrity he brought to the role.
However, he was unable to match the success of his fellow Scot, who won 38 trophies during his 26 years in charge.
Despite winning the Community Shield against Wigan Athletic in August, Moyes has since seen his side miss out in all cup competitions, while they also look likely to finish a lowly seventh in the Premier League this season.
The former Preston North End centre-back finally lost the faith of United's hierarchy, including American owners the Glazer family and executive vice-chairman Edward Woodward.
A 2-0 loss to Moyes' former club Everton was one defeat too many, as it confirmed United's failure to qualify for the lucrative Champions League next season, the first time since 1995 the club will be missing from Europe's top-tier club competition.
