Ladbrokes have the former Red Devils boss at 2/1 to resume his former post in a caretaker capacity until the end of the season if David Moyes is sacked.
While Fergie remains a 16/1 outsider to take the post on a permanent basis it now seems highly possible that the Old Trafford hierarchy could turn to him to guide the team through to the summer.
Ryan Giggs remains a favourite to take the post on a permanent basis but is still completing his UEFA Pro License and United could well see Ferguson as a safe pair of hands.
That would allow Giggs to complete the necessary qualifications and give him a fresh start in the off-season rather than asking him to take control in the middle of season already beyond redemption.
Manchester United could well see Sir Alex Ferguson as a safe pair of hands
Giggs is 5/1 to take the United job on permanently with Ladbrokes, with Borussia Dortmund next fancied at 6/1.
Louis van Gaal - who has also been linked with the Tottenham job but will not be free until leading the Netherlands to the World Cup - is 8/1.
After that Ferguson is joined by Bayern Munich supremo Pep Guardiola, former United assistant boss Carlos Queiroz, Everton maestro Roberto Martinez, Ajax boss Frank De Boer and Chelsea's Jose Mourinho as 16/1 to assume the job in the long-term.
However, it seems that the odds of Fergie being back at United in the short term remain substantially more favourable.
