Mourinho will make one last throw of the dice at Anfield on Sunday, where Chelsea will kick off five points adrift of the hosts with just nine more up for grabs this season.
Brendan Rodgers knows his former mentor is likely to use every trick in the book marked 'Mind Games' once tonight's Champions League assignment in Madrid is completed, and Anfield, 24 years without a title to celebrate, will inevitably also be the focus of the world's media.
But 19-year-old Sterling, the scorer of two goals in Sunday's 3-2 win at Norwich, is convinced the Liverpool players are thinking only of the 90 minutes on the pitch and replicating the form that has brought them an astonishing 11 successive Premier League wins.
"We will just take it as another game," he said. "We won't concentrate too much on what is happening outside as we just want to take care of what is going on on the pitch. We want to get three more points.
"We come in every day, we see each other and we know what the dream is. We are keeping each other modest. If we keep working hard, there is a real goal at the end of it. We just have to keep our head down, keep working hard and concentrate on the weekend.
"We are taking it step by step. We know what a big part of the season this is. We will just go into Chelsea and try and do what we did against Norwich. We go again next week."
'We go again' has become the catchphrase of the season having been barked at the players by captain Steven Gerrard in a post-match huddle after Manchester City were beaten at Anfield the previous week thatwas captured on camera.
We will just go into Chelsea and try and do what we did against Norwich
"Yeah," Sterling confirmed. "The way we have been playing, we don't need to get too excited. So we go again! That's all we will keep doing until the end and hopefully we can do the business."
Rodgers and Co lost the reverse fixture 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in December but one Liverpool player has already netted a winner against Chelsea.
That was Italian striker Fabio Borini, the loanee who scored from the spot to earn Sunderland an unexpected victory on Saturday while Liverpool were travelling to East Anglia.
Borini's mobile phone must have been buzzing with congratulatorary messages afterwards and although Sterling didn't send one himself he was delighted for his absent team-mate.
"Everyone was buzzing for him in the hotel when we found out, " he said. "It's a credit to him but everyone is just working hard to bring the dream home."
No-one is working harder than the speedy Sterling, whom Rodgers insisted after the Norwich game was the 'best young player in Europe'
Just as they had done against City, Liverpool had been forced to hang on at Norwich but came through in the end.
"It was nerve wracking but I thought everyone did collectively well," he added. "We got the result in the end. It's a credit to the lads that we got the job done. Both teams really wanted to win and it was end-to-end stuff but we knew what the dream was at the end. We are just working for each other and fighting for our lives. I don't think we were nervous, we just know what we can get out of it."
Sterling also made a point of celebrating his first goal with Rodgers. "He has had belief in me," he said. "I am just glad I got a goal for him and a goal for the team."
