FORMER Manchester United defender David May has backed Ryan Giggs to right the ship as caretaker boss and then carry on at Old Trafford as Louis van Gaal's assistant next term.
Giggs has been confirmed as temporary boss until the end of the season after David Moyes was relieved of his duties at United on Monday.
And May believes that the Welshman will have no qualms about telling the Red Devils' players what they need to hear.
He said: "It's a wise appointment.
"He knows how this club works, he knows the fans and the passion the fans have, he knows what it is all about.
I think he'd be the perfect under-study for Van Gaal and say 'listen this is how the club is run'.
"I'm sure Giggsy will give that dressing room something that's been needed, whether it's a kick up the backside or whatever it is."
Indeed, May believes that it is important for someone with a history at the club to be in a position of authority, even if van Gaal takes over next season.
"He will get the respect, not saying David Moyes didn't get the respect, but when you have a player of Giggsy's stature going into that dressing room now, whether he becomes the permanent manager next year, people are talking about Van Gaal.
"I think he'd be the perfect under-study for Van Gaal and say 'listen this is how the club is run'."
Van Gaal is currently hot favourite with the bookmakers to be the next permanent boss after Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola ruled themselves out of contention.
