Pictures of iconic characters Darth Vader, C-3PO and bounty hunter Greedo have been made using tens of thousands of STAPLES.

Each portrait requires patience and organisation as they take more than six months and up to 33,000 individual staples to complete.

Star Wars fanatic James Haggerty, 40, realised the potential of using staples in art while playing with an old stapler.

The 40-year-old artist from Brooklyn in America decided to focus on characters from the iconic George Lucas movies as he is a huge fan of them.

Mr Haggerty has created the mosaics as a hobby but said he was commissioned he would charge $10,000 (£5,950) given the amount of time it takes.

The school teacher said: "I discovered the potential of using staples to create works of art by daydreaming and playing around with an old stapler.

"Staples, just like an etched line, can be bold and graphic or soft and subdued.

"When I use coloured staples, each one acts like a dash of paint in a painting and when viewed from only a few steps back is optically mixed."

He starts each portrait by creating between five and 10 ink drawings before transferring his favourite one onto a piece of painted black board.

Once the design is etched he plants individual staples into the board - altering the chamber for each change in colour or shade.

Mr Haggerty added: "I've been using the same stapler now for all three large mosaics - that's 60,000 staples. It's amazing how well it holds up.

"My affinity with the Star Wars universe all goes back to my childhood.

"I was hooked after the first few minutes of the first movie - they captured my imagination as a child and have continued to live on."
