Half the population is classed as being too fat – yet a third of the obese and half the overweight refuse to believe they have a problem. They think they are in good or even excellent health.
Nearly half the overweight and more than a quarter who are obese have no desire to diet even though they are at a dramatically increased risk of a host of chronic and killer diseases.
A significantly higher proportion of obese Britons visit their GP for conditions known to be weight-related, compared with those who are a healthy weight.
A quarter of the obese sought treatment for high blood pressure last year, compared with nearly one in five of the overweight and less than one in 10 of those whose weight is considered healthy.
The Aviva Health Check UK Report found a clear north-south divide, with more than half – 56 per cent – of those living in the North and Wales more likely to be overweight or obese.
London has the highest proportion of people, at 50 per cent, with a healthy weight.
A quarter of the nation does not eat even a single portion of fruit or veg a day despite the five-a-day recommendation.
Aviva said: “Plans to lead a healthier lifestyle are being neglected under the pressures of modern living.”
