Here, we take a look back at Hoskins' top ten most memorable moments in his career and why he will be remembered for years to come.
1. Who Framed Roger Rabbit
This 1988 classic saw Hoskins win the Evening Standard British Film Award for Best Actor, and also earned him a Golden Globe nomination. Playing the role of Californian private investigator Eddie Valiant, no one can forget his hilarious love/hate relationship with Roger.But probably the best thing about Hoskins' performance in Who Framed Roger Rabbit is the fact that he acted so well against an invisible character - which is hard to master.
Some might say that Hoskins pioneered the technique the in Robert Zemeckis-directed movie.
The film tells the story of toon-hating Eddie as he becomes involved in a complex murder plot and realises that a cartoon rabbit is his only hope to prove his innocence.
2. The Long Good Friday
Hoskins' first most memorable moment in a British film was when he portrayed Harold Shand, an old-fashioned London gangster is aspiring to become a legitimate businessman.It was the first time that he won the Evening Standard British Film Award for Best Actor, and also saw him nominated for a BAFTA.
The 1980 film also stars Dame Helen Mirren Harold, a follows Harold as he comes close a lucrative new deal.
However, when bombs start showing up in very inconvenient places, Harold realises that a mysterious syndicate is trying to muscle in on his action, and he wants to know who they are.
3. Mona Lisa
Six years after his unforgettable performance in The Long Good Friday, Hoskins won ten awards for his role as George in neo-noir mystery drama Mona Lisa.The film tells the story of George who has just been released from prison, and manages to get a job driving a call girl, played by Cathy Tyson, from customer to customer.
Initially George and Simone don't get on as he doesn't fit in with the high class customers Simone services.
For the film, Hoskins won a BAFTA, a Golden Globe as well as a Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award and was also nominated for an Academy Award.
4. Mermaids
Hoskins starred alongside Cher in the 1990 film Mermaids, where he took on the role of Lou Landsky.The story follows cher as an unconventional single mother who relocates with her two daughters (Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci) to a small Massachusetts town in 1963, where a number of events and relationships both challenge and strengthen their familial bonds.
The movie wasn't exactly met with rave reviews with Time Out New York writing: "Characterisation suffers, with Charlotte and her mother too self-absorbed to engage our sympathies. Crucially, they just aren't funny," however it has since become somewhat of a cult film.
5. Hook
No one can forget Hoskins' portrayal of Captain Hook's sidekick Smee in the 1991 fantasy adventure film Hook.The fim, which also stars Dustin Hoffman and Robin Williams, was directed by Steven Spielberg and went on to gross a worldwide total of $300.85 million.
According to reports, Hoskins bought beer for over 300 extras from the film after a lengthy and complicated scene was cut from the final movie.
He later reprised his role as Smee for 2011's Neverland.
6. Twenty Four Seven
Despite making a name for himself in Hollywood, Hoskins never abandoned the British film industry and in 1997 he took on the role of Alan Darcy in the Shane Meadows film Twenty Four Seven.Meadows wrote the part of Darcy specifically for Hoskins, and the film tells the story of the highly-motivated character as he tries to get the young people off the street of a typical English working-class town and into doing something they can believe in: boxing.
The film was nominated in the Best British Independent Film category, and Meadows went on to win the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1998 Venice Film Festival as well as the Douglas Hickox Award at the British Independent Film Awards.
7. Nixon
In the 1995 American biographical film Nixon - which was directed by Oliver Stone - Hoskins portrayed the first Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation J. Edgar Hoover.The role was originally offered to Joe Pesci but he decided to turn it down, and Hoskins went on to earn a nomination for a Screen Actors Guild Award.
The film tells the story of former U.S. president Richard Milhous Nixon, from his days as a young boy to his eventual presidency which ended in shame.
8. Felicia's Journey
Hoskins takes on the role of a lonely middle-aged catering manager named Joe Hilditch in the 1999 British film Felicia's Journey.The movie sees him befriend a young Irish girl (played by Elaine Cassidy) who travels to Birmingham to find her boyfriend - whose child she is expecting.
She accepts the help of Hoskins' character, but is completely unaware that he has befriended and subsequently abused more than a dozen young women.
He, of course, sets his sights on Felicia and much of the story is told in flashbacks, revealing how each of the characters grew to the point where they now find themselves.
For this film, Hoskins won the Genie Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role.
9. Mrs Henderson Presents
Hoskins stars alongside Dame Judi Dench in the 2005 British comedy entitled Mrs Henderson Presents.The film tells the story of Laura Henderson who buys an old London theater and opens it up as the Windmill, a performance hall which goes down in history for, among other things, its all-nude revues.
Hoskins plays prominent London theatre impresario Vivian Van Damm in the movie and was nominated for a Golden Globe, a British Independent Film Award and a St. Louis Gateway Film Critics Association Award.
10. Snow White and the Huntsman
Snow White and the Huntsman was Hoskins' last film before his retirement in August 2012.He took on the role of Muir in the Disney adaptation, which also stars Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron.
In a twist to the well-known fairy tale, the story follows the Huntsman (played by Chris Hemsworth) as he is ordered to take Snow White into the woods and murder her.
However, he ends up becoming her protector and mentor in a quest to vanquish the Evil Queen.
The film was released in May 2012 and three months later, Hoskins announced that he would be retiring from acting due to his ongoing battle with Parkinson's disease.
