LORD Lawson has claimed that leaving the EU would give Britain a "revival of self-confidence" which he says was lost when Margaret Thatcher resigned as Prime Minister.
Speaking at a dinner held by the Institute for Economic Affairs, Lord Lawson, who was chancellor of the Exchequer under the Thatcher government, said: "We do need a revival of self-confidence. In 1979 we inherited a country that lacks self-confidence.
"One of the most important things that a Thatcher government did was change the mood of the nation to give it back its confidence.
"This clutching hold of the EU is a sign of a lack of national self-confidence - which is not healthy.”

However, he has hinted that he will fight for the UK to remain part of a reformed EU, saying he did not want Britain to become like Norway, which trades with the EU but has no influence on how it is run.
Lord Lawson countered these concerns, saying that Norway had a good economy and was benefitting from being outside the EU.
He was speaking ahead of the European Parliament elections, which will be held in all EU member states next month.
A poll carried out by The Telegraph at the weekend found that Labour is currently ahead with 30 per cent of the vote, followed by Ukip with 27 per cent.
The Conservative party is in third place with 22 per cent of people supporting them, according to the survey of 2,000 people.
