Reports in Italy suggest that Napoli sporting director Riccardo Bigon has already made discrete enquiries about whether Welbeck will be allowed to leave this summer and whether he would be interested in a move to Serie A.
Bigon reportedly asked to be kept informed about Welbeck's situation in a meeting with the player's agent over a move for Genk's Kalidou Koulibaly.
Welbeck has been linked with Spurs and Everton in recent weeks but it is thought United will await the appointment of a new boss before making any major decisions about personnel in the off-season.
Napoli want to be kept informed about Danny Welback's situation
However, it is thought that Welbeck may have become disillusioned at Old Trafford after failing to hold down a regular place in the starting line-up and could be interested in a fresh challenge.
Napoli believe that a bid in the region of £10m may be enough to persuade United to sell, and hope that their ability to offer Champions League football may give them the edge over United, Everton and Tottenham.
Indeed, Napoli are thought to be concerned that a good showing by Welbeck at this summer's World Cup could see United change their stance or at least up their price and may make a move sooner rather than later.
Whether Welbeck would be interested in a move to a foreign league this early in his career remains to be seen but the presence of former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez may help smooth the transition.
