WAYNE ROONEY fears he may be forced to play second fiddle to Robin van Persie should Dutch coach Louis van Gaal take over at Manchester United.

Rooney has recovered from a tough time at Old Trafford in Sir Alex Ferguson's final season to become the leading man again.

Under David Moyes, Rooney's form improved and he was handed a bumper £300,000-a-week deal earlier this year.

But following Moyes' sacking, the England striker is worried about his future should favourite van Gaal be given the United job.

Van Gaal and van Persie work together with Holland, where the 62-year-old will look to the ex-Arsenal man to spearhead their hopes at the World Cup in Brazil.

And according to reports, should van Gaal become United boss he wants van Persie to be his captain, not Rooney.

Rooney was due to gain the armband with current skipper Nemanja Vidic heading to Inter Milan in the summer.

But now his chances of being the main man in Manchester are under threat, with van Gaal certainly not shy of making big decisions.
