Fabregas left Arsenal in 2011 to rejoin childhood club Barcelona but the move has not always panned out as the 26-year-old imagined.
Not only has Fabregas struggled to hold down a regular place under Gerardo Martino this term but the midfielder was also booed by the Camp Nou faithful after being brought on as a substitute against Athletic Bilbao recently.
Reports in Spain suggest that Barca technical director Andoni Zubizaretta remains keen for Fabregas to remain at the club next season.
But that will depend on whether Martinez remains in charge and which other players the Catalan club bring in during the offseason.
Txiki Begiristain remains a fan of Cesc Fabregas
Indeed, if Barcelona are successful in their pursuit of Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal, Fabregas could find himself even further surplus to requirements.
And while Manchester United continue to monitor the situation with Fabregas on a list of potential targets Ed Woodward wants to discuss with Louis van Gaal when he is confirmed as David Moyes replacement next week, the Red Devils could face competition from rivals City.
City's technical director Txiki Begiristain is known to remain a huge admirer of Fabregas and would reportedly "sign him with his eyes closed" should the opportunity present itself.
Ultimately, however, the decision is likely to reside with Fabregas himself.
And with the player repeatedly stressing his commitment to the Barcelona cause it's possible that both United and City's interest, remains just that.
