The Brazilian is facing the prospect of not winning a trophy for the first time in nearly three years as a Chelsea player, and he is not happy.
Luiz was left heartbroken as Chelsea's Champions League hopes were crushed by Atletico Madrid at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, as Diego Simeone's powerful team taught them a footballing lesson.
Chelsea still have two Premier League games to go, starting at home to Norwich on Sunday, and are still in with a chance of the title, but it is now looking a forlorn hope. Even if they win both, if Manchester City win their three the title will go to the Etihad.
In his first full season at Stamford Bridge after joining from Benfica in January 2012, Luiz won the Champions League and the FA Cup. Last year, he lifted the Europa League. This year it looks as if they will fall just short in every competition.
For Luiz, who may be on the way in the summer as the clearout and rebuilding begins with both Barcelona and Bayern Munich bidding for him, there is only one word to describe it.
"It could be that we are heading for a rubbish season," he said. "We are a big club and we want to win trophies.
"Atletico played the same way we did in Spain. They defended well and counter-attacked. In the second half they get a penalty, then we almost score and at 2-2 it would have been a different game. But we lost our organisation and they scored a third.
"That is football. But for me it is about the personalities. We need to be men.
"Last season it was poor season until the end but then we won a title. We will keep fighting in the league. We cannot win automatically, so it will be difficult. But we need to fight.
"Everyone speaks about results. It is a bad season if you don't have trophies at a big club. That is true.
"But everyone here is human. Everyone gave their best all season. Everyone can make mistakes.
"But you cannot hide. I do my job every day. I give everything. If there were a lot of bad games when you didn't run, then fine. But we gave our best in so many games. Sometimes it is possible to win, sometimes not."
Mourinho himself is confronting a second season without a trophy as a manager for the first time in his career, following a galling fourth straight Champions League semi-final defeat.
He has insisted all along that next season will be when the best of his new Chelsea will be on show, when he has got in the players he wants; that this season they are the still the "little horses".
Luiz said: "Next season there is a plan. We have many fantastic players and everyone wants to win, because when you sit at home and watch television you expect to see Chelsea fighting for trophies."
Change was afoot this summer anyway, long before Wednesday's setback. All three strikers - Fernando Torres, who scored against his old club to give Chelsea hope, Demba Ba and Samuel Eto'o, who gave away the crucial penalty that swung the game - will be unloaded this summer. Atletico's £32million striker Diego Costa, scorer of 36 goals this season, is the man they want to lead their attack next term, and talks have already started.
The clear-out will be large. John Obi Mikel, Victor Moses, Marko Marin, Oriol Romeu, Gael Kakuta, Josh McEachran, Hilario and Sam Hutchinson are due to leave along with the strikers.
Ashley Cole, still without a new contract offer, has come back into the team and performed well lately, but is also likely to depart. And it could even be that Brazilian star Oscar, who interests Paris St Germain, could be sold.
Striker Romelu Lukaku, a success on loan at Everton, is wanted by Tottenham, who are proposing a deal that could see Brazilian Paulinho switch to Chelsea. But Lukaku wants to try to salvage his Chelsea career if he can.
Oscar is suffering from a hip problem that is threatening his World Cup prospects.
He said: "I'm not playing because I felt a pain due to an injury to my hip. We still have two important league games left, but it is important that I rest because the World Cup is here."
