FEROCIOUS thunderstorms erupted around the UK yesterday triggering spectacular lightning displays, hail and localised flash floods.
More than an inch of rain fell in a matter of hours in the morning in parts of Kent, Norfolk and Suffolk with another inch expected by midnight.
Hailstones pounded Peterborough in Cambridgeshire.
Forecasters say torrential rain will continue to batter Britain over the weekend bringing a risk of more flash floods.
But then the wacky weather will brighten up for Bank Holiday Monday with some parts of the country seeing temperatures hit a sizzling 73F (23C).

Met Office spokeswoman Nicky Maxey said: “There are going to be showers around until Sunday with low pressure over the country.
“There could be some heavy rainfall, and we may put out a severe weather warning.
“Monday is looking better with temperatures above average for the time of year, but it is unsettled again into next week.”
Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, said: “It is going to remain unsettled with a fair bit of rain about for the next few days especially around the South.
“Some could be heavy and thundery with a further risk of flash flooding after Thursday’s deluge. But it is drier and warmer on Monday.”
The Environment Agency has nine flood alerts in place across the South where groundwater and river levels are still high after the winter downpours.
