ONLINE movie and TV streaming service Netflix have today announced plans for a price hike despite seeing profits rise this year.

The California based firm said they could increase monthly subscription rates for new members later this year in a letter sent to shareholders.

It comes after Netflix increased prices in Ireland by almost a pound in January and said any other subscription hikes would vary between countries.

The letter by CEO Reed Hastings and CFO David Wells said: "Our current view is to do a one or two dollar increase, depending on the country."

It added that current customers could continue paying the monthly fee as it is priced at the moment "for a generous time period".

The Netflix message was sent to shareholders on Monday and also reported profits of £32million for the first quarter of the year.

The letter said that increasing prices would help Netflix "acquire more content and deliver an even better streaming experience."

Netflix have 48million members across the globe but said they are setting their targets in line with US cable and satellite channel HBO.

The letter added: "We are approaching 50 million global members, but that is far short of HBO's 130 million."

Netflix also said there increase in membership was partly due to the success of a "big hit" with House of Cards season two.

The news comes as Amazon announced that they have signed a deal with HBO to show some of their most popular shows on their streaming service.

Award winning dramas The Sopranos and The Wire will be coming to customers of the Amazon Prime streaming service from May 21.

Newer shows like Girls and Veep will be broadcast three years after they were first aired.

Popular fantasy show Game of Thrones has not been mentioned by Amazon as being part of the deal.
