THE daughter of Mark Shand, the Duchess of Cornwall's brother, paid tribute to her late father on Facebook today.

Ayesha Shand, 19, posted a moving photo of her and the 62-year-old smiling together on the social networking site.

The teenager was in Italy when Camilla's brother died in New York after a fund raising event for his Elephant Family charity.

It is believed Mr Shand hit his head on the pavement after he slipped while lighting a cigarette outside a hotel bar in the early hours of Tuesday.

The Duchess of Cornwall was said to be "utterly devastated" by her brother's death.

Camilla's son Tom Parker Bowles said thank you on Twitter to people who had paid tribute to his "late, great" uncle.

He tweeted: "A massive thank you for everyone's lovely words about our late, great uncle Mark Shand. Deeply appreciated."

While Camila's nephew Ben Elliot described Mr Shand as his "hero".

He posted: "RIP my hero and uncle Mark Shand. We loved him so much. What a life.

"Mark did so much for the plight of the Asian elephant. Elephants never forget. Nor will we."

The Duchess of Cornwall, 66, and her husband Prince Charles, 65, are due to begin a four-day tour of Canada on May 18.

Camilla, who is on her Easter break, has no public engagements over the next week but her husband is scheduled to visit Ballater Caravan Park on Monday.

The trip to the village of Ballater on Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire is just a few miles from his Scottish retreat Birkhall.

A heartbroken friend of Mr Shand revealed she placed her hand on his heart to comfort him as he lay dying.

Ruth Powys, chief executive of Mark Shand's charity, rushed to his side at the city's Bellevue Hospital following the freak accident.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, the 36-year-old said: "Mark was my everything, my inspiration in life. He gave me everything I have, he's everywhere I look."

Describing his final moments, she said: "I had my hand on his heart - he was surrounded by his elephant family."

The travel writer was in New York for an auction at Sotheby's in aid of a charity for underprivileged children and the Elephant Family.

The charity team went for a dinner after the auction, which raised almost £1million through the sale of special Faberge eggs.
