Luhrmann has been in negotiations for several weeks and should this deal close it is expected that his wife, Oscar winner Catherine Martin, would join the project as costume designer and possibly as production designer as well.
The Australian director, 51, known for Moulin Rouge, Romeo And Juliet and The Great Gatsby, is said to be in negotiations to direct the project, with Leonardo DiCaprio, who starred in the latter two Baz hits, being touted to play the singer.
“Warner Bros has secured rights to all musical components in Presley’s catalogue for this project,” said an industry source, adding: “Luhrmann has been in negotiations for several weeks and should this deal close it is expected that his wife, Oscar winner Catherine Martin, would join the project as costume designer and possibly as production designer as well.”
Kelly Marcel, who adapted Fifty Shades Of Grey for the big screen, is writing the script, although it is unclear which period of Elvis’ life the film will focus on, according to industry website The Wrap.
Elvis, who was reported to have died from a cardiac arrhythmia in 1977 aged 42, hit the headlines again this year when a Channel 4 show claimed to have discovered what could have caused his death. DNA analysis on a hair sample thought to be his revealed that he suffered from a disease of the heart muscle.
