Eyewitnesses spoke of their horror as the sinkhole swallowed up cars.
One wrote: "The cars just kept falling."
Another amazingly managed to capture the moment on video as cars began to fall into the abyss.
Workers have now begun to attempt to fill the enormous hole and trucks carrying tarmac and diggers have been set to work to rebuilt the road.
Gas supplies to the area have been cut off and some residents have been evacuated from nearby homes.
A cause of the collapse has yet to be determined.
Kevin Harris, a spokesman for Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, said he did not know how many houses or people are affected by the continued evacuation order in Charles Village.
He said city officials will meet with residents tomorrow morning.
