Alix Tichleman, 26, appeared in court in handcuffs and a red jumpsuit and did not enter a plea as bail of £870,000 was set.

Police said surveillance footage showed the alleged high-end escort step over the victim's body and drink a glass of wine before leaving the boat.

Officers said Ms Tichleman did not provide medical assistance to 51-year-old Forrest Timothy Hayes who went unconscious during the overdose last November.

Mr Hayes, who was a father-of-five, was found dead the next morning by the boat's captain at a harbour in Santa Cruz, America.

Police said they are also investigating Ms Tichelman in connection with a similar incident in another state.

Santa Cruz Deputy Police Chief Steve Clark would not elaborate on the details of the other case.

He said: "There's a pattern of behavior here where she doesn't seek help when someone is in trouble."

Mr Hayes had worked for several leading technology firms including Apple and Sun Microsystems.

Ms Tichelman's attorney Diana August did not immediately reply when contacted for comment.

Assistant District Attorney Rafael Vazquez said more serious charges may be filed as authorities are still investigating the case.

Ms Tichelman was arrested on July 4 after a detective posed as a potential client and lured her back to the Santa Cruz area.

Ms Tichelman had more than 200 clients and met through the website SeekingArrangement.com, according to police.
