Arron Hendy and Ruari Barratt suffered from intense stomach pains and started to hyperventilate after a single mouthful of the XXX Hot Chilli Burger.

The pair had to sign a waiver before eating the burger at a food festival yesterday and said the pain was so intense they thought they were dying.

The dish, served at the Burger Off in Hove in East Sussex, contains a sauce made in India which uses 5,000 kilos of piri piri chillis concentrated one kilo.

It measures up to nine million on the Scoville scale. Police pepper spray rates between 500,000 and five million while tabasco sauce is up to 5,000.

Mr Barratt said: "It was hard to walk.

"I needed to drink milk to neutralise the burning, which was hard because I was hyperventilating so much my hands had seized up."

Mr Hendy added: "I was in so much pain I was telling people I felt like I was dying.

"It's embarrassing but it felt that bad. If you're thinking of trying this burger for a dare, just don't."

Mr Hendy, 38 from Seaford, decided the burger was too spicy to eat after one bite and felt physically ok after drinking lots of milk.

Mr Barratt, a 32-year-old from Brighton, took a bite and minutes later suffered severe stomach pains which increased.

He lost the feeling in his hands, his legs were shaking and his eyes rolled back in his head and had to go to hospital.

Within two hours Mr Hendy was suffering similar problems and followed his friend to seek medical attention.

The pair, who are journalists for the Brighton Argus, were sent to try the burger after the takeaway came in a list of top restaurants on Trip Advisor.

Burger Off owner Nick Gambardella, 54, said the dish is not served to anyone under 18.

People who buy the £3.90 dish sign a waiver releasing staff from any responsibility of its effects.

Customers are also warned that the spicy burger will "ruin their weekends".

Mr Gambardella, from Brighton in East Sussex, said: "We do try and take a certain level of responsibility.

"We don't sell the burger to anyone under 18, and if someone's been drinking we don't let them have it.

"I spend about as much time convincing people not to try one as I do selling them. I tell people it will ruin their weekend."
