PRINCE Charles was paid an extra £1.5million last year, taking his total earnings to £21.6million, accounts show.
His public funding from the Sovereign Grant and money to cover his official travel from government departments almost doubled to £2.1million.
Charles paid £4.2million in income tax on the Duchy’s profits after deducting expenses, the accounts reveal.
The Prince’s soaring travel costs, up from £644,000 in 2012 to more than £1.3million last year, reflected his increasing workload as the Queen gradually reduces hers.
Possibly the most expensive individual journey was his £246,000 return flight to Mthatha in South Africa, hurriedly arranged so that he could attend the funeral of Nelson Mandela last December.
His visit to India with the Duchess of Cornwall cost £434,000 and bill for the couple’s trip to the Middle East on an official Foreign Office visit was £245,000.
His travel bills are picked up by his mother and by the Foreign Office.
Prince Charles’ bill for supporting his sons, the Duchess of Cambridge and grandson Prince George is more than £1million.
Although officials at Clarence House will not reveal exactly how much the young Royals need for their official duties, the accounts show that the “other expenditure” section covering those bills as well as capital expenditure soared by £800,000 last year to £2.8million.
