A troupe of dancing grannies found themselves shut down by police while trying to perform in a city square.

The Chinese Dancing Granny World Tour has graced Paris' Place du Louvre with their moves, where they received huge applause and praise on the internet.

But when the pensioners tried to bust a groove in Moscow's Red Square, the police were less than impressed and proceeded to shut the party down.

The group dancing, or guangchangwu, is a favourite past time for middle-aged and retired women in China.

The ladies apparently find it a good way to keep fit and socialise.

But some people fail to see the fun side of the group exercise and complain about amplified music blaring along with the choreographed dancing.

The appearance is a nightly occurrence in dozens of cities and towns in China.

This is not the first time that the social gathering has caused controversy in other countries.

In some parts of the US it is even banned because of the disturbance it creates.

Last year in Brooklyn, New York, the loud music of some Chinese residents dancing led to conflict between the dancers and the police.
