STEPPING out in their wellies these girls know how to dress for Glastonbury – which is probably just as well with violent thunderstorms poised to sweep the country.
They have been warned to brace themselves for a muddy time, with heavy rain expected into the weekend. However, July is shaping up to be a scorcher with experts saying the best of summer is “yet to come”.
The Met Office said heavy showers threaten to affect both Glastonbury, which opened yesterday, and Wimbledon, with up to an inch of rain falling in a matter of hours.
“Showers could be quite heavy,” added spokeswoman Nicky Maxey. “It will also feel cooler with temperatures in the high teens.
“The showers will continue into Friday and Saturday and some will be thundery. Next week will be drier, although there will be showers.”
Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, said parts of the UK, especially the South, should expect ferocious thunderstorms. He said although it will feel much cooler, temperatures are due to rise again by the middle of July.
“There are some mighty downpours on the way, the rain will rumble on through Saturday and into next week,” Mr Powell added. “But after that there are signs of things settling down. The best is yet to come towards the middle of July, when we could see temperatures reaching the 80s.”
The forecasts come after Britain has enjoyed almost a fortnight of blue skies and sunshine, with temperatures hitting 80.6F (27C) in Scotland last week. James Madden, of Exacta Weather, said: “As we progress towards the end of the month and into August, there is the potential for another extensive period of warmth to develop, which could result in some exceptionally warm and hot weather at times.”
