REFURBISHING Kensington Palace for William and Kate has cost the Queen £4.5million over the past two years.

But it could have been more if her accountants had not asked the couple to cover the cost of a new kitchen. The Cambridges have also paid for furniture and fittings.

A royal source said: “Some of the fit-out we felt should be paid for privately. The Cambridges have been extremely sensitive to the fact that public funds were paying for a lot of this work.”

The apartment was “not opulent” said the source, without revealing how much the new kitchen cost.
