Charlie Bothuell, 12, was feared dead after he went missing on June 14 and was not seen for more than a week.

The disappearance in Detroit sparked police and FBI searches but officers on Wednesday found the child behind a barricade of boxes in his family basement.

His father Charles Bothuell Snr was appealing for information on live TV in the US when he was told by a news anchor his son was found alive and well.

HLN presenter Nancy Grace left the elder Mr Bothell stunned when she told him the news and then asked "how can your son be alive in your basement?"

The visibly stunned father was left breathing heavily and repeatedly said "what" after he found out his son was discovered at his home.

The presenter asked the elder Mr Bothuell if he had had checked his basement when his son went missing during the broadcast yesterday.

He said: "I checked my basement, the FBI checked my basement, the Detroit police checked by basement, my wife checked my basement.

"I've been down there several times. We've all been checking."

Detroit Police Chief James Craig told CNN affiliate WXYZ-TV that he could not definitely say the child had been in the basement the entire time he was missing.

But he added: "I've never seen anything quite like this.

"We found him barricaded in the basement, behind boxes and a large ... drum.

"There's no way he could have erected this makeshift area of concealment."

Detroit police spokesman Sergeant Mike Woody added that it appeared the child arrived in the basement recently and did not appear to have been captive.

Officers said the child would not return to his home until their investigation was completed.
