THE World Cup can be considered the most illustrious audition available to any international player, but it is also the world's greatest tournament for scouting.
Here, Entertain9jar looks at 10 stars that could be on their way to England.
1) Thomas Muller (Age 24, Germany and Bayern Munich)
Although hardly an unknown, Muller was exceptional in Germany's first game against Portugal. A hat-trick performance that took him to eight World Cup goals in total, he has set himself up well to retain his Golden Boot from 2010. Although he will probably remain at Munich for the foreseeable future after sealing a new contract, Manchester United are interested.
2) Guillermo Ochoa (Age 28, Mexico and currently a free agent)
Ochoa produced an unbelievable performance to keep Brazil to a 0-0 scoreline last week. The quality and consistency of his saves, in that game and against Cameroon, will have drawn the eye of many clubs as will his free agent status. Liverpool and Arsenal are keen.
3) Memphis Depay (Age 20, PSV Eindhoven)
Depay has thoroughly impressed at this World Cup and currently entertains interest from Manchester United and Tottenham among others. His pace and attacking composure blend well with skillful footwork making him a great acquisition for any teams missing a left-sided player.
4) Eduardo Vargas (Age 24, Napoli)Vargas' calm finish for Chile's first goal against Spain was the beginning of the World Champions' exit from the tournament. It also confirmed that Vargas can score at the top level, a factor of his game debated at parent club Napoli, after loan spells at Valencia and Gremio. His attacking interplay and trickery have always been strong and if he starts playing with the confidence a World Cup goal can bring, Napoli may soon be fielding more than loan offers. Arsenal have been tracking his progress.
5) James Rodriguez (Age 22, AS Monaco)
A tricky attacking playmaker whose impressive stock will only have risen following his performances for Colombia. Pacy and skillful, he can function in a central or a wide role with ease, making him a versatile and desirable target. Monaco will be keen to hold on to their hot prospect, having signed him from Porto for £36m last summer. Linked with United and Spurs.
6) Stefan de Vrij (Age 22, Feyenoord)
Composed at the back, physical and able to score from set pieces, de Vrij seems like Holland's centre-half of choice for the next decade. Feyenoord will do well to hold on to the young Dutchman, who's defensive capabilities are becoming more prescient with every tournament match. Everton boss Roberto Martinez is an admirer.
7) Dries Mertens (Age 27, Napoli)
Although one of the older members of the Belgian attacking line, Mertens has held his own despite upcoming world-class talent – and for good reason. Mertens can sustain a high-tempo passing game and has a quick turn of pace, able to function as an inside forward or a traditional winger.
8) Jose Maria Gimenez (Age 19, Atletico Madrid)Has barely featured for club Atletico, but seemed all too comfortable dismissing England's attacks at the back for Uruguay. At 19 years of age will need a little nurturing, but is one for the future, having impressed at the U20 World Cup last year and now at the real thing.
9) Xherdan Shaqiri (Age 22, Bayern Munich)
Heavily linked to Liverpool before the tournament and his current form will only help persuade managers of his pedigree. Pacy, agile and stocky, Shaqiri has the skill and athleticism to perform for a top club. Bayern Munich may try to hold onto the promising youngster, but the offer of first-team football for a Champions League club may prove tempting – many are saying he already has a foot out of the door.
10) Joel Campbell (Age 21, Arsenal)
Ignited a Costa Rican comeback against Uruguay and showed his talent during the second half. Not lacking in confidence or technical ability, Campbell is set to return to Arsenal for next season.
