A VILE attacker who dragged a 90-year-old woman off the street and raped her was being hunted by detectives last night.
The attacker put his hand over her mouth, dragged her backwards then beat her until she lost consciousness.
She later regained consciousness and managed to stagger to the nearby butchers in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, to raise the alarm.
Police issued an appeal following the incident shortly before 7am on Tuesday in the hope the local criminal community would be so appalled by the crime they would help track down the culprit.
Rochdale MP Simon Danczuk said: “Our heart goes out to this poor woman. She must have gone through hell.
“There is a real sense of shock and horror in the community and the police need to do everything possible to catch this sick individual.
“But they need the help of the community and people must stand up and be counted.
“There is a huge amount of anger across the town and we need to unite to help ensure that criminals like this have no place to hide.
“Anyone with even a glimmer of suspicion should contact the police immediately.“
Superintendent Alistair Mallen, of Greater Manchester Police, said: “I am sure the entire community will share our revulsion at this vile, wicked and despicable crime.
“The victim has been through a horrific ordeal and we are all hoping she can make a full recovery.
“She is now being supported by experienced officers and we are doing everything possible to reassure her we will catch the man responsible.
“I now want people, including the criminal fraternity, to imagine if that had been your mum or grandma.
“I want to harness these feelings and use them to help the police do their job – catch this man and put him before the courts.”
Police said the attack occurred just yards from her home as the woman, who lives alone, stepped out carrying her walking stick in one hand and a pound coin in the other.
Stephen Chrimes, who runs E&M Chrimes Butchers, said: “This has left the whole community appalled.
“The old lady comes in here every single morning first thing. She was always first in the queue and we always have a chat. She’s very active and independent, especially for a 90-year-old and we’re all praying for her speedy recovery.”
