Authorities have surrounded the soldier, known only as Yim, who had opened fire with an assault rifle at a border outpost last night.

He killed five soldiers and wounded seven others who were trying to persuade him to surrender near the North Korean border.

A defence official said today one platoon leader was wounded when the runaway soldier fired at military personnel closing in on him.

Villagers in an area close to where Yim is holed up have been warned not to leave their houses.

Yim was scheduled to be discharged from the military in September. It is not clear how much live ammunition he has on him.

Thousands of troops from North Korea are stationed along the world's most heavily armed border.

There was no indication Kim Jong-un's country was involved but tensions have been running high between the North and the South.

North Korea have staged a series of missile and artillery drills and last month threatened to "wipe out" South Korea's government.

South Korea has repeatedly vowed to respond with strength if provoked by the North.

Shootings have happened in the past on the border. In 2011 a 19-year-old marine corporal went on a rampage at a Gwanghwa Island base.

Investigators later said the corporal was angry about being shunned and slighted and showed signs of mental illness before the shooting.

While in 2005 a soldier tossed a hand grenade and opened fire at a front-line army unit in a rampage that killed eight colleagues and injured others.

In South Korea all able-bodied men are conscripted and must serve around two years in the military.

It is aimed at countering aggression from their northern neighbours.
